Democracy Dismantled

Choosing the commissioners

Since 2023, the government has held two of the three votes on the panel that picks the election commissioners. Critics say a panel it controls will choose officials it trusts, so the referee comes to depend on one of the players. They also point to what happened to the one commissioner who dissented in 2019. The government says independence does not depend on a judge sitting on the panel, and that the Prime Minister should not be presumed to act in bad faith. The Supreme Court has yet to decide.
